Northern Wild Rice

Northern wild rice is a North American aquatic cereal, not ordinary rice. It requires a managed shallow-water habitat with suitable sediment, stable water levels and cold-wet seed handling rather than an ordinary raised bed.
- Sun
- Full sun
- Water
- Keep moist through establishment and grain filling; avoid waterlogging
- Spacing
- Aquatic paddy or suitable managed shallow water; not a dry-bed density
- First harvest
- Summer harvest after seasonal aquatic establishment; locally variable
Tips
- Obtain cultivated seed and local aquatic growing guidance; check wetland rules and do not introduce it into natural waterways without permission.
- Keep planting seed cold and wet as directed by the supplier; ordinary dry seed storage can destroy viability.
- Sow using local fall or cold-stratified spring aquatic methods, not a generic raised-bed frost calendar.
- Maintain suitable water depth and avoid abrupt level changes during the floating-leaf stage.
- Harvest in stages as seeds ripen and shatter; use proper curing, drying and hulling methods before food use.
Aquatic crop requiring managed shallow water and cold-wet seed dormancy treatment; unsuitable for ordinary soil beds.
