Lima Bean

Lima beans need warm, well-drained soil around pH 6.0-6.8 and a long growing season. Avoid excess nitrogen, which promotes vines over beans, and maintain steady moisture during flowering and pod filling.

- Install a sturdy 6-8 foot support for pole varieties before vines climb.
- Provide about 1 inch of water weekly and avoid cultivating around shallow roots.
- Watch for bean beetles and bacterial leaf spots, and avoid handling wet plants.
- Pick pods when seeds are plump but still green, shell them promptly, and cook beans thoroughly before eating.
