Citrus
Lemon

Lemon trees need freely draining soil around pH 6.0–6.5, strong light, and regular citrus fertilizer containing micronutrients. Start with certified disease-free grafted stock, expect several establishment years, and use a container with bright protected winter quarters where outdoor cold is unsuitable.
- Sun
- Full sun
- Water
- Water deeply during establishment; adjust to rainfall and soil
- Spacing
- 144 in
- First harvest
- 2–4 years
Tips
- Keep the root flare above the soil surface and use a container with unobstructed drainage holes.
- Water thoroughly when the top few inches begin drying, then empty the saucer.
- Split labeled citrus-fertilizer applications through active growth rather than giving one heavy dose.
- Remove rootstock suckers below the graft and inspect leaves for scale, mites, and leafminer.
- Harvest when fruit is yellow and full sized; citrus does not become sweeter after picking.
Plant nursery stock in spring, or in fall where winters are mild, keeping the root flare at soil level and any graft above soil.
