Aster
Jerusalem Artichoke

Jerusalem artichokes grow in well-drained soil around pH 6.0-7.5 and need only modest compost or fertilizer. Avoid heavy nitrogen, which favors tall tops, and choose a contained permanent site because missed tubers readily regrow and spread.

Tips
- Plant tubers 3-5 inches deep and 12-18 inches apart in a bed where spreading shoots can be controlled.
- During the establishment year, water regularly until vigorous growth begins and water deeply during prolonged drought.
- Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding and stake tall stems if wind exposure is likely to topple them.
- Watch for powdery mildew and remove unwanted shoots promptly rather than allowing the clump to expand.
- Begin digging after fall frost kills the tops, leaving some healthy tubers for future crops only where you want a permanent patch.
Plant firm, healthy tubers or tuber pieces with buds in early spring when the soil is workable.
