Iris
Bearded Iris

Bearded iris needs very well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-7.5 and moderate fertility. Avoid rich nitrogen feeding and mulch over the rhizomes, and divide clumps in late summer when they become crowded.

Tips
- Plant rhizomes horizontally with their tops exposed or barely covered in hot climates, about 14 inches apart.
- Water newly planted rhizomes to establish roots, then let the soil dry between deep waterings.
- Apply a low-nitrogen fertilizer in early spring only as needed, keeping granules off the rhizomes.
- Watch for iris borers and soft rot, removing affected tissue and clearing old foliage from the bed.
- Cut spent flower stalks at the base and divide clumps every 3-4 years after bloom, usually in late summer.
