Aster
Globe Artichoke

Globe artichokes prefer deep, fertile, well-drained soil around pH 6.5-7.5, enriched with compost. Feed in early spring and during active growth, keep moisture even, and protect perennial crowns from winter cold and soggy soil.

Tips
- Set rooted divisions or nursery plants at their original depth, spacing them 3-4 feet apart in spring.
- Prioritize establishment in the first year and harvest only if plants are vigorous and produce sizable buds.
- Water deeply during bud formation and side-dress with nitrogen fertilizer as vigorous growth resumes.
- Inspect buds for aphids and new growth for slugs, and mulch crowns for winter where perennial culture is feasible.
- Cut tight, full-sized buds before scales open, then remove spent flowering stalks near the base.
Plant rooted divisions or nursery plants in spring after severe freezes; seed-grown starts are also used, especially for annual varieties.
