French Tarragon

French tarragon needs well-drained soil near pH 6.5-7.5 and is especially prone to decline in wet winter soil. Add a modest amount of compost, avoid heavy nitrogen feeding, and divide aging clumps to maintain vigorous shoots.

Tips
- Space rooted plants 18-24 inches apart with their crowns at the original soil level.
- Water new divisions consistently, then let the surface dry between waterings without soaking the crown.
- Use a light spring compost dressing instead of frequent fertilizer applications.
- Divide established clumps every three or four years and remove shoots showing rust or persistent dieback.
- Harvest only a few tender tips while plants establish, leaving plenty of foliage to build roots.
Plant rooted French tarragon cuttings or divisions in spring; seed does not produce true French tarragon.
