Carrot
Dill

Dill prefers well-drained soil at pH 5.5-6.5 and usually needs little fertilizer when grown in compost-amended beds. Direct sow to avoid disturbing its taproot, and make repeat sowings because plants soon shift from leaves to flowers and seed.

- Water when the top inch of soil dries, avoiding constantly soggy conditions.
- Skip heavy nitrogen feeding and stake tall varieties in exposed gardens.
- Inspect for aphids and recognize striped black swallowtail caterpillars before deciding whether to relocate them.
- Snip leaves before flowering or cut seed heads when seeds turn tan, finishing drying in a paper bag.
