Butternut Squash

Butternut squash prefers fertile, well-drained loam at pH 6.0-6.8, improved with compost before planting. Feed moderately when vines begin running and keep foliage healthy so fruit can fully mature before storage.

- Water deeply at soil level to provide about 1-2 inches weekly while fruit expands.
- Give vines room to spread or use a sturdy trellis with slings to support fruit.
- Check for squash bugs and powdery mildew, and avoid excess nitrogen once flowering begins.
- Cut fruit when the skin is uniformly tan and hard, then cure undamaged squash for 10-14 days around 80-85°F with good airflow.
