Brassica
Broccoli

Broccoli grows best in fertile, well-drained soil around pH 6.0-7.0 and cool conditions. Mix in compost, side-dress with nitrogen after plants establish, and maintain steady moisture to build full heads rather than small, stressed ones.

Tips
- Set sturdy young transplants 18-24 inches apart before they become rootbound.
- Provide 1-1 1/2 inches of water weekly and mulch to reduce moisture swings.
- Use insect netting from planting and inspect leaf undersides for cabbageworm eggs.
- Cut the main head while buds are tight, before any yellow petals show.
- Leave healthy plants in place after the main harvest because many varieties produce edible side shoots.
