Borage
Borage

Borage grows best in well-drained soil near pH 6.0-7.0 and needs little fertilizer beyond a modest compost addition. Give its broad, bristly foliage room, and remove spent flowers if you do not want abundant self-sown seedlings.
- Sun
- Full sun
- Water
- Even moisture; about 1 in/week including rain
- Spacing
- 18 in
- First harvest

Tips
- Direct sow seeds 1/2 inch deep after severe cold has passed and thin plants to 12-18 inches apart.
- Water young plants regularly, then water established plants deeply during extended dry spells.
- Avoid heavy nitrogen feeding and stake tall plants before wind or rain topples them.
- Watch for powdery mildew on crowded plants and cut off faded flower clusters before seeds drop.
- Pick newly opened flowers for ornamental use; borage contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, so avoid routine consumption and seek medical advice before ingesting it.
