Black Fonio

Black Fonio is a traditional West African small-seeded food cereal. It needs locally adapted seed, a warm growing season and careful harvest and processing; black and white fonio are different species.
- Sun
- Full sun
- Water
- Keep moist through establishment and grain filling; avoid waterlogging
- Spacing
- Fine-seeded stand; use regional seeding rate
- First harvest
- Season- and cultivar-dependent; white fonio often earlier than black fonio
Tips
- Obtain correctly identified grain seed and check day-length and regional season requirements.
- Sow tiny seed shallowly into a fine firm seedbed using regional seeding rates.
- Control weeds early and avoid excess nitrogen, which can increase lodging.
- Watch ripening closely and cut before seed shatters; dry and thresh on a clean sheet.
- Plan for labor-intensive cleaning and dehulling before cooking; dry grain safely for storage.
Use region- and species-specific seasonal sowing guidance; a universal frost-relative date is not reliable.
